ὅτι δὲ τὸ ὕδωρ ὁμολογουμένως ἐστὶ τρόφιμον δῆλον ἐκ τοῦ τρέφεσθαί τινα ἐξ αὐτοῦ μόνου τῶν ζῴων, ὥσπερ τοὺς τέττιγας. πολλὰ δὲ καὶ τῶν ἄλλων ὑγρῶν ἐστι τρόφιμα, οἷον γάλα, πτισάνη, οἶνος. τὰ γοῦν ὑποτίτθια γάλακτι διαρκεῖται. καὶ πολλὰ δὲ ἔθνη γαλακτοποτοῦντα ζῇ. Δημόκριτον δὲ τὸν Ἀβδηρίτην λόγος ἔχει διὰ γῆρας ἐξάξαι αὑτὸν διεγνωκότα τοῦ ζῆν καὶ ὑφαιροῦντα τῆς τροφῆς καθʼ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν, ἐπεὶ αἱ τῶν Θεσμοφορίων ἡμέραι ἐνέστησαν, δεηθεισῶν τῶν οἰκείων γυναικῶν μὴ ἀποθανεῖν κατὰ τὴν πανήγυριν, ὅπως ἑορτάσωσι, πεισθῆναι κελεύσαντα μέλιτος ἀγγεῖον αὑτῷ πλησίον παρατεθῆναι, καὶ διαζῆσαι ἡμέρας ἱκανὰς τὸν ἄνδρα, τῇ ἀπὸ τοῦ μέλιτος ἀναφορᾷ μόνῃ χρώμενον, καὶ μετὰ τὰς ἡμέρας βασταχθέντος τοῦ μέλιτος ἀποθανεῖν. ἔχαιρε δὲ ὁ Δημόκριτος ἀεὶ τῷ μέλιτι· καὶ πρὸς τὸν πυθόμενον πῶς ἂν ὑγιῶς τις διάγοι ἔφη, εἰ τὰ μὲν ἐντὸς μέλιτι βρέχοι, τὰ δʼ ἐκτὸς ἐλαίῳ. καὶ τῶν Πυθαγορικῶν δὲ τροφὴ ἦν ἄρτος μετὰ μέλιτος, ὥς φησιν Ἀριστόξενος, τοὺς προσφερομένους αὐτὰ ἀεὶ ἐπʼ ἀρίστῳ λέγων ἀνόσους διατελεῖν. Λύκος δὲ πολυχρονίους φησὶν εἶναι τοὺς Κυρνίους (οἰκοῦσι δʼ οὗτοι περὶ Σαρδόνα) διὰ τὸ μέλιτι ἀεὶ χρῆσθαι· πλεῖστον δὲ τοῦτο γίνεται παρʼ αὐτοῖς.

CTS URN Retriever
The CTS URN retriever is a tool for retrieving and citing paragraphs, passages, and words in the text of the Deipnosophists by typing the corresponding CTS URN. The Digital Athenaeus is providing the text of the Teubner edition of the Deipnosophists by Georg Kaibel (1887-1890), which is cataloged as perseus-grc2 in the Perseus Catalog.
The syntax of the URNs follows the specification of the CITE Architecture.

The icons on the left of each paragraph are links to external resources:
- list icon : automatic alignment of index entries with the Greek text of the Deipnosophists (indices by August Meineke, Georg Kaibel, and S. Douglas Olson);
- tag icon : POS tagging of the text through the OpenNLP POSTagger for Ancient Greek.
Using CTS URNs, it is possible to export citations of the Deipnosophists down to the word level. By selecting a portion of text holding down the ALT-key, users get a pop-up window with the CTS URN that identifies the selected chunk of text.
