ὅτι Σιμωνίδης τὴν αὐτὴν ἀρχὴν τίθησιν οἴνου καὶ μουσικῆς. ἀπὸ μέθης καὶ τῆς κωμῳδίας καὶ τῆς τραγῳδίας εὕρεσις ἐν Ἰκαρίῳ τῆς Ἀττικῆς εὑρέθη, καὶ κατʼ αὐτὸν τὸν τῆς τρύγης καιρόν· ἀφʼ οὗ δὴ καὶ τρυγῳδία τὸ πρῶτον ἐκλήθη κωμῳδία. τὴν παυσίλυπον ἄμπελον δοῦναι βροτοῖς. οἴνου δὲ μηκέτʼ ὄντος οὐκ ἔστιν Κύπρις οὐδʼ ἄλλο τερπνὸν οὐδὲν ἀνθρώποις ἔτι, Εὐριπίδης ἐν Βάκχαις φησί καὶ Ἀστυδάμας δέ φησι· θνητοῖσι τὴν ἀκεσφόρον λύπης ἔφηνεν οἰνομήτορʼ ἄμπελον. συνεχῶς μὲν γὰρ ἐμπιπλάμενος ἀμελὴς γίνεται ἄνθρωπος, ὑποπίνων δὲ πάνυ φροντιστικός, Ἀντιφάνης φησίν οὐ μεθύω τὴν φρόνησιν, ἀλλὰ τὸ τοιοῦτον μόνον, τὸ διορίζεσθαι βεβαίως τῷ στόματι τὰ γράμματα, φησὶν Ἄλεξις Σέλευκος δέ φησι τὸ παλαιὸν οὐκ εἶναι ἔθος οὔτʼ οἶνον ἐπὶ πλεῖον οὔτʼ ἄλλην ἡδυπάθειαν προσφέρεσθαι, μὴ θεῶν ἕνεκα τοῦτο δρῶντας. διὸ καὶ θοίνας καὶ θαλείας καὶ μέθας ὠνόμαζον· τὰς μὲν ὅτι διὰ θεοὺς οἰνοῦσθαι δεῖν ὑπελάμβανον, τὰς δʼ ὅτι θεῶν χάριν ἡλίζοντο καὶ συνῄεσαν. τοῦτο γάρ ἐστι τὸ δαῖτα θάλειαν. τὸ δὲ μεθύειν φησὶν Ἀριστοτέλης τὸ μετὰ τὸ θύειν αὐτῷ χρῆσθαι.

The syntax of the URNs follows the specification of the CITE Architecture.

Using CTS URNs, it is possible to export citations of the Deipnosophists down to the word level. By selecting a portion of text holding down the ALT-key, users get a pop-up window with the CTS URN that identifies the selected chunk of text.
